What is Parish Nursing

What is the Role of a Parish Nurse?

  • Parish nursing is Jesus' type of ministry which includes physical, emotional and spiritual care.
  • Parish Nursing focuses on the promotion of health within the values, beliefs, practices, mission, and ministry of a faith community.
  • Our parish nurse will access the needs of our parishioners and plan programs to meet those needs.

What Parish Nursing is NOT

  • Parish Nursing does not take the place of Home Health Care.
  • Parish Nursing does not provide wound care, invasive procedures (such as injections and IV's), treatments that require a doctor's order.
  • Administer and coordinate health screenings such as blood pressure checks, blood glucose, cholesterol, nutrition, and compliance with medication.
  • Counsel and educate parishioners on health related issues.
  • Help families make decisions regarding Advance Directives.
  • Act as a liaison between hospitalized member and hospital staff.
  • Make a referral to appropriate community resources.
  • Attend doctor appointments with parishioners to interpret and clarify instructions.
  • Provide spiritual support and referral for families experiencing illness and loss.
  • Serve as a resource for parish staff on health related issues.
